In genere non amiamo il collezionismo. Abbiamo la sensazione che comunichi una specie di senso di morte e immobilismo. E' come se per certi versi quella pratica tendesse a implicare maniacalità, possesso, ordine sfrenato e il volere qualcosa che nessun altro possa poi raggiungere. Detto questo il fatto che riporremo nello scaffale con più luce nella nostra casa e in rigoroso ordine alfabetico tutto quello che pubblicheranno i Valerian Swing da qui ai prossimi 25 anni non ci farà sentire mai in contraddizione con quanto detto sopra. Primo perché la musica del terzetto di Correggio è una delle cose più vitali e ostili all'idea di controllo e disciplina che ci sia mai capitato di ascoltare. Secondo perché faremo sempre tutto quello che rientra nelle nostre possibilità (senza che la loro etichetta si incazzi troppo) per far sí che le loro canzoni si propaghino e diffondano tra gli stereo dei nostri amici.
Non sappiamo se i nostri si siano calati volontariamente nel tunnel di una specie di concept compositivo. Il precedente lavoro A Sailor Lost Around The Earth però rendeva perfettamente l'idea di smarrimento e confusione del loro sistema nervoso. Proprio come quello di un marinaio che ha pestato la sua bussola e si trova a testa in giù nella tempesta. Con Aurora, i Valerian Swing sembrano aver individuato la loro stella di riferimento e maturato la piena consapevolezza di dove può arrivare il proprio battello. Anche quando si capovolge o devono combattere con i polpi giganti nello stretto di Sicilia (Scilla).
A proposito di molluschi cefalopodi giganti, il loro approccio è talmente tentacolare che potrebbero ancora vincere a braccio di ferro i Battles, attaccare la labirintite agli Storm and stress o fare a chi ha la barba più lunga con i Neurosis. Questa volta il loro proverbiale gusto multiforme ha una coerenza e un impatto molto più letale. E' intervenuto nella produzione il leggendario Matt Bayles (Isis, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Botch, Mastodon, The Fall of Troy, Minus the Bear, Burnt by the Sun e Norma Jean). Non sappiamo chi ha avuto la meglio nelle decisioni importanti, ma il risultato finale suona come una specie di decalogo della morte degli Zu, che prima di andare a scoprire qualche isola misteriosa nel Mediterraneo si mangiano le vitamine dei Locust o si accecano con qualche reverbero dei This will destroy you. L'ultimo pezzo Calar alto è una gran presa a bene davvero. Quando lo mettiamo per tornare a casa ci fa sembrare che abbiamo vinto la battaglia di Troia pure noi.

Generally we do not like collecting. We feel like it communicates a kind of sense of death and stagnation. Like if, in some ways, this obsession tends to involve mania, possession, unrestrained sense of order, wishing to get something that no one else can ever have but us. That said, the fact that we will place on the shelves of our house - the most enlightened ones -, in rigorous alphabetical order, everything which Valerian Swing are going to release from here to the next 25 years, - that will be the exception to what above just said, with no regrets. Firstly, because the music from the trio from Correggio (Italy) is one of the most vital and hostile things to the idea of control and discipline that we have ever heard so far. Secondly, because we will always do everything possible (hopefully their record label won't be pissed) so that their songs propagate and disseminate among the stereo of our friends.
We do not know if our men have fallen willingly into the tunnel of a kind of songwriting concept. Their previous work A Sailor Lost Around The Earth perfectly rendered at best that idea of bewilderment and confusion of their nervous system. Just like a sailor who stepped on his compass and suddenly finds himself upside down in the storm. With Aurora, Valerian Swing seem to have found their North Star and gained full knowledge of where they can get the boat. Even when you flip over or have to fight with the giant octopus in the Strait of Sicily (Scilla).
Speaking of giant cephalopods, their approach is so sprawling that could still win in an arm wrestle Battles, giving the labyrinthitis to Storm and stress, or get in a competition on who has the longest beard with Neurosis. This time their proverbial manifold taste for Music has a coherence and impact far more deadly. The legendary Matt Bayles (Isis, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Botch, Mastodon, The Fall of Troy, Minus the Bear, Burnt by the Sun e Norma Jean) took care of the production. We do not know who got the last word on most important decisions, but the end result sounds like a kind of Decalogue of Death of Zu, like if they, before going to discover some mysterious island in the Mediterranean, had assumed the vitamins of The Locust or got blind because of some reverb of This will destroy you. The last track, Calar Alto, is masterful. When we play it while going back home, it makes us feel like we have won the battle of Troy too.
