Finito di ascoltare Management dei Delta Sleep, ci si sente quasi più intelligenti e viene voglia di giocare a scacchi.
Se gli impareggiabili Crash of rhinos (sempre su Big Scary Monsters rec.) erano riusciti forse a trovare la formula perfetta e quasi ingestibile dell'emo anni '90, il quartetto di stanza a Londra/Brighton/Canterbury ha una valigia sotto il letto piena di mosse vincenti in ambito di un math cervellotico e mirabilmente complesso.
Jesus Bill o Camp Adventure hanno cosí tanti cambi melodici e stacchi di tempo che anche solo mettendoli su bandcamp viene la paranoia che si possano scaricare automaticamente le batterie di tutte le nostre calcolatrici.
Pur destreggiandosi superbamente con l'algebra, i Delta Sleep riescono sempre a conservare comunque una proverbiale sensibilità melodica. La cosa sembra quasi ovvia visto che possono contare di una dei migliori voci in circolazione nell'ambito di questo genere. Sia nel cantato che in alcune soluzioni più fragili e intimiste ricordano quasi i memorabili accenni del grande Brett Tohlen dei Lewis. Oltre alle ambientazioni tremendamente emozionali di uno dei gruppi più sfortunati in casa Deep Elm, i quattro riescono a spaziare su tempi e riprese che variano da quelli più tambureggianti dei Battles, a quelli geometrici dei Don Caballero, ma senza problemi d'alcool e più ironia. Se hanno registrato le tracce stacchetto per stacchetto, ci avranno messo sei mesi. Se hanno fatto tutto in una tirata probabilmente ci hanno messo sei mesi per impararseli alla perfezione. In Italia recentemente hanno fatto un tour con i nostri Valerian Swing, solo questo direbbe già molto sulla loro poliedricità. Nella bio di To lose la track, si parlava di Delta Sleep, una specie di Tera Melos con meno puzza sotto il naso. Noi rilanceremmo, paragonandoli a una versione dei Maserati con il dono della sinteticità e la raffinatezza de Cap'n Jazz. Ah si screamoJazz, era questo quello che volevamo dire.

If the incomparable Crash of rhinos (always on Big Scary Monsters rec.) were able to find the perfect formula, at same time unstable, of 90's emo, this quartet hanging between London/Brighton/Canterbury keep a bag under the bed, stuffed of winning moves in the land of a brainy and wonderfully complex math-rock.
Jesus Bill as well as Camp Adventure have so many melodic changes and variatons o tempos, that - if you play these tracks on bandcamp - you fear they might automatically discharge all of the calculators' batteries you have.

Though they clearly show they can handle algebra, Delta Sleep keep constantly feeding a surprising melodic sensibility. Ok it's not that hard, seen they can count on one of the best vocalist alive around, for this music genre. Both in vocals and in guitar phrasing, they might remind of the great Brett Tohlen from Lewis. Besides those emotional soundscapes, own trademark of the unluckiest band on Deep Elm records, the quartet range from the hammering tempos of Battles to Don Caballero's geometry. If they have recorded this album stop&go per stop&go, I think it took them at least 6 months to finish it. If they did it as a unique take, probably, it took them six months only to learn that well.
Delta Sleep recently have been on tour in Italy with our Valerian Swing. This is symptomatic of their polyhedric soul. To lose la track, talking of them, was reffering to something like Tera Melos without being snobbish. We double the bet, and we make a comparison with Maserati, graced by the sense of conciseness and the elegance of Cap'n Jazz. Oh yeah, screamo jazz. That's what I was trying to say.
