I Larsen, un duo chitarra batteria da Ferrara, ho avuto il piacere di ascoltarli al Juke Joint... un festival
organizzato dai pugliesi Barsexuals, in occasione dell'ultima pasquetta, in quel di Lucera.
Oltre ai complimenti per un'organizzazione ruspante ma impeccabile sotto ogni punto di vista devo dire che la line-up mi ha lasciato veramente sbalordito al di la di ogni più rosea aspettativa.
Infatti ho impressa bene in mente la performance infuocata dei Chocolate Starfish; lo stupore per il punk verace dei Barefeet Dogs; le impertinenti No Muzak che più che bambine cattive mi sono apparse ''viziate''; lo sfrontato live di Gene Crazed; gli stessi Barsexuals che meriterebbero maggiore attenzione dai booking nostrani e non solo ... perché i loro concerti sono veramente uno spettacolo; senza dimenticare NUMBER 71 ONE MAN BAND e The Whatevers... e in ultimo i Lepi in Prazni, che vista l'ora e la permanenza davanti alle casse dell'impianto per circa dodici ore, non sono proprio riuscito ad ascoltarli.
Secondo il mio modestissimo parere i Larsen, non me ne vogliano le altre band, ci hanno regalato la miglior esibizione del Juke Joint e tutto fomentato non mi sono fatto scappare l'occasione di avere tra le mani il loro 7' uscito per l'indipendentissima Framax Records.
Il packaging è spartano ma efficace e ci fa capire da subito che i due ragazzi ferraresi sanno ironizzare bene ma hanno poca voglia di scherzare.
Il lato A ci regala Calcutta... si inizia con un frastuono di distorsione cosmica... come se i più di 4 milioni e mezzo di abitanti della città indiana si mettessero ad urlare contemporaneamente... poi chitarra e batteria si passano la palla e il microfono con continui cambi di ritmo aumentandone sempre di più la frenetica velocità; alla fine, neanche indossassero la casacca della gloriosa Spal, depositano in rete un garage contorto... elettrico. Decisamente moderno nel senso di meno incline a quello classico di matrice 60 o revival, ma tendente invece al noise più truce, selvaggio e rumoroso.
Il lato B ci fa capire subito cosa sia l'effetto larsen e perché la band ne abbia preso a pieno titolo il nome; Boo Radley si presenta con tutta la sua vorticosa emanazione di caos ordinato... perché - basti guardare nel mio armadio - anche nella confusione ci vuole un senso; altrimenti non si capisce più un cazzo. I Larsen qui ci disorientano con i loro effetti... ma con una batteria implacabile ci rimettono tutti in riga; poi la voce che non chiedetemi perché, mi ricorda il più allucinato Sky Saxon con i suoi semi... ma terribilmente più incazzato; il compianto guru della psichedelica garage non aveva a che fare con l'Italia di questi tempi però.
Tutto questo per me è semplicemente un gran pezzo... poi le classifiche e le classificazioni come al solito le lascio agli esperti... posso solo consigliare di andare ad ascoltarli e di non perdersi le loro performance sul palco quando verranno ad inquinare l'acustica della vostra città.

I had the luck to see Larsen, a combat two-piece from Ferrara (Italy), performing live at Juke Joint festival, organized by the apulian Barsexuals, at the last Easter Monday, close to Lucera.
So, besides my personal greetings to the past perfect festival crew, I must say the bands scheduled were impressive indeed.
I mean, I can't forget the blasting performance of Chocolate Starfish; my surprise in front of the genuine punk spirit of Barefeet Dogs; or also the No Muzak - more than brats they look like spoiled; Gene Crazed's wild live set; and the same Barsexuals, they would deserve more attention from our local booking agencies and not only.. because their live shows are amazing; and why not to mention NUMBER 71 ONE MAN BAND and The Whatevers...and last but not least, Lepi in Prazni, that after about twelve hours in front of the amps I missed them.
No offense to anyone, but actually it's been Larsen that I enjoyed the most there, and that's why I couldn't miss their 7'', released by the indie Framax Records.
The packaging is pretty spartan, yet efficacious, and it tells us immediately that the two boys from Ferrara love irony and at the same time have no time to joke.
The A-side is Calcutta.. it starts with a cosmic fuzz.. like if the 4 millions and more citizens of the indian town start screaming in unison.. then guitar and drums pass the ball and microphone, with several changes of tempo, getting faster and faster; at the end it is like they made a twisted garage-goal, wearing the jacket of the glorious Spal.. electric. Definitely modern, I mean, not inclined to 60s or any revival, but more with an attitude devoted to noise, wild and distorted.
The A-side shows us what's the larsen effect, and why they choose this name; Boo Radley comes out with its whirling current of ordered chaos.. because, - just have a look to my wardrobe.. - even with mayem you need to find a direction; else, you don't get a shit. And Larsen bewilder us with their effects here.. and with a deadly drumming they put us in line; and the vocals call to my mind a fuzzed-out Sky Saxon with his Seeds.. yet even more pissed off; the mourned guru of psychedelic music had nothing to do with Italy of these days though.
I mean, that's simply a good track.. hit lists and tags are for others.. I can just say to give a listen to their tracks, and if they came to your town, don't miss them.
