One more time: I think Carlo Barbagallo is criminally underrated.
And still criminally unknown to most.
Something I already wrote here and there on komakino, writing reviews of part of his (self-released) records.
This new chapter for Barbagallo, born 1985, Quarter Century, - I guess it takes a snapshot of his 25th birthday, musically.
Helped out by musicians/friends, members of Albanopower, Music For Eleven Instruments, Suzanne'Silver, Les Dix-Huit Secondes, Enablers, Tellaro, Camera 237 and many others, principally from his same sicilian sound-entourage, this album collects 14 tracks of exquisite alternative pop music, with a sip of pervading melancholy.
Intriguing melodies, with a slight vintage shade (The Crowd, Holiday / H.L.) barely conventional, yet, fully accessible, - always richly arranged (Show, White).
Sometimes shaped like soundscores for a Sundance movie (Mediocre, - its jazzy alterego Ercoidem, and Tx313 as well), - eclectic intimacy of trip-hop tempos (Simon Templar, Clouds Behind The Moon) and electronica touching the indie heartbeat, - blended with emotional lyrism (Great Sun's finale), - all culminating in Reject (No Reaction Time), an amazing song fusing Black Heart Procession's nostalgia and Beatles' inventiveness: written together with Francesco Cantone (Twig Infection) and Lorenzo Urciullo. For sure, the record's hit single. Pure genius. And it worths a mention its touching outro/stardust.
Something able to be memorable and give you shivers to each listen.
Again: where are the indie labels when you need them?

Ancora una volta: sono convinto che Carlo Barbagallo sia criminalmente sottostimato. E criminalmente ignorato dai più.
Qualcosa che ho già scritto qua e là su koma, e che non mi stancherò di ripetere sinchè le cose non cambiano.
Questo nuovo capitolo per Barbagallo, classe 1985, a titolo Quarter Century, immagino che sia un'istantanea del suo 25° compleanno, musicalmente. E auguri.
Aiutato da amici/musicisti del suo stesso entourage sonoro siculo (Albanopower, Music For Eleven Instruments, Suzanne'Silver, Les Dix-Huit Secondes, Enablers, Tellaro, Camera 237 e altri), quest'album raccoglie 14 tracce di squisita alternativa pop, con assaggi di pervasa malinconia.
Melodie intriganti, con leggere ombrature vintage (The Crowd, Holiday / H.L.), appena convenzionali, ma al tempo accessibili, - e sempre riccamente arrangiate (Show, White).
Tracce talvolta modellate come soundscore per un film stile Sundance, (Mediocre, - il suo jazzy alterego Ercoidem, e anche Tx313), - un'intimità eclettica di tempi trip-hop (Simon Templar, Clouds Behind The Moon) ed elettronica che scandisce un battito cardiaco più indie, - ogni cosa ben dosata con del lirismo emozionale (il finale di Great Sun), - sino a culminare in Reject (No Reaction Time), - un'ottima canzone che fonde la nostalgia dei Black Heart Procession a l'inventiva dei Beatles: un pezzo scritto a più mani con Francesco Cantone (Twig Infection) e Lorenzo Urciullo. Di certo il singolo di questo disco. Puro genio. Come la stessa coda di outro finale.
Qualcosa di memorabile, e capace, anche, di darti i brividi.
