Stewart non abbiano goduto molto dei frutti del loro lavoro.
Formatisi nel 2006, nel giro di un anno e mezzo, creano e producono il loro album di debutto, Sweetness, yes!, che esce ad Aprile 2008 per la Distraction rec.
Una delle loro canzoni, ancora prima dell'uscita dell'album, viene inserita nella serie TV Skins, mentre la stessa sorte viene negata alla loro cover di Give a little love, tratta dal musical Bugsy Malone, poiché Paul Williams non concede loro (non per la serie TV, almeno) i diritti di utilizzazione. Vatti a fidare di quelli che lavorano con i pupazzi!
I tre giovani dei dintorni di Newcastle upon Tyne, che rispondono ai semplici nomi di battesimo di Paul, Alex e Leon, cominciano a esibirsi spesso in giro per il Regno Unito e diventano presto famosi per lo spirito glam-pop dei loro concerti: lucine colorate, coriandoli, stelle filanti, glitter e brillantini a profusione, palloncini colorati in ogni dove e danze scatenate in vestiti sopra le righe.
Prendono i sinth anni '80 e le chitarre indie, un pizzico di David Bowie vestito da Freddy Mercury, li condiscono con un po' di Depeche Mode che strizzano l'occhio ai campionamenti dei Lemon Jelly e al famo-casino dei B-52's, e il gioco è fatto.
Si scelgono anche un nome che richiama hype intorno a sé: Moira Stuart altri non è che una giornalista cult della BBC, l'unica di colore per tanti anni, chiacchierata per la sua lesbo-relazione con Pat Evans e, infine, cacciata dalla stessa BBC perché troppo vecchia!
Insomma, Paul, Alex e Leon le carte in regola sembrano averle proprio tutte: sono gggiòvani, sono inglesi, sono cool e sono electro-indie. Scrivono persino cose divertenti sul loro myspace.
Eppure qualcosa, stranamente, per qualche mistero insondabile del mercato e della fortuna, non deve aver funzionato.
Perlomeno, i tre, finora, hanno raccolto molto meno successo di gruppetti a loro simili come i Klaxons o i New Young Pony Club (ma questi ultimi possono contare sulla forza della topa e, allora, si sa, la musica cambia ...).
Ora, a distanza di un paio d'anni, i nostri ci riprovano, rispolverando l'album del 2008 con tutta una serie di remixes ad opera di alcuni loro connazionali come D_rradio o The Matinee Orchestra, solo per citarne un paio, il duo dei mantovani Tempelhof, gli interessantissimi spagnoli Dot Tape Dot, il norvegese Orange Crush, il bravissimo danese Keith Canisius e qualche immancabile guest americano come, per esempio, OK Ikumi.
Tutti giovani emergenti e volenterosi, dediti all'elettronica di oggi, al retrogusto glitch e al recupero della new wave.
Nel complesso, il disco è piacevole e scorre via come un dolce ma corroborante pop-risveglio e, per dirla (quasi) come la direbbe un mio amico, non sarà seminale ma, sicuramente, paga un tributo all'elettronica anni '80.

It looks like Moira Stewart didn't enjoy exactly the fruits of their labor.
Together since 2006, in almost one year and a half they write and produce their debut record, Sweetness, yes!, released April 2008 via Distraction rec.
One of their songs, even before the album release date, is chosen for Skins, and so it was supposed to be their cover of Give a little love, from Bugsy Malone musical, but Paul Williams didn't grant them the license (at least for the use on TV). Never trust people working with puppets!
The three guys from the arounds of Newcastle upon Tyne, simply answering to the first name of Paul, Alex and Leon, started performing live shows in UK, getting more and more popular thanks to the glam-pop spirit of their exhibitions: coloured lights, confetti, streamers, glitters and balloons galore, dressing bizzarre and wild dancing.
Grabbing synths dear to the 80s, guitars indie-cut, a sip of David Bowie masqueraded as Freddy Mercury, blending music with some of Depeche Mode blinking to Lemon Jelly art of sampling, plus some of B-52's ready-to-party attitude, - les jeux sont faits.
They choosen for their band a name shaping a sort of hype around them: Moira Stuart, she was a British journalist, the first African-Caribbean female newsreader on British television, - later linked with a relationship with Pat Evans and fired from BBC because too old!
Anyway, Paul, Alex and Leon have got all the cards needed for the table: they are yyyoung, english, cool, electro-indie. They also write funny things on their myspace.
But something got wrong, we don't know why, that something mysterious of the business machine (and fate) didn't work that well.
I mean, they didn't get the same exposure of other bands somehow likely such as Klaxons or New Young Pony Club (but these ones can count on the pussy-factor strenght, - and okay, everything changes)..
Now, two years later, our guys try their luck again, dusting off their record with a bunch of remixes, some signed by the country fellows D_rradio or The Matinee Orchestra, just to cite a few, plus the two from Mantova / Italy, Tempelhof,- the spanish Dot Tape Dot - to keep an eye on, - Orange Crush from Norway, - the excellent danish Keith Canisius and the american guest OK Ikumi.
A list of ready and willing artists, addicted to the modern electronic music, with a glitch after-taste, and some hint of new-wave.
A good record indeed, sweet pop-caffeine, - or, as a friend of mine would say, - not seminal, but, for sure, it pays a tribute to the electro 80's.
