Twig Infection was one of those Bands I say criminally underrated.
From Siracuse, Sicily, Italy, one EP and two beautiful full-lenght records, active from 1998 to 2005, then they splintered in two parallel projects, Tellaro (feat. Franceso Cantone, vocals, keyb, guitar), and - here we are - The PepiBand, (wtf name..) seeing Enzo Pepi (okay, now I see) and Marco Caruso, joined by Alessandro Formica and Joseph Forte (who formerly replaced Enzo when he left Twig Infection).
Debut release, bread and indie noise rock for breakfast, fans of Polvo (the love-song to Their homeland, Sicily) and Unwound (5%) can't miss this: The PepiBand is rhythmically aroused by guitar driven math-rock dissonance and a distorted bright sound, frenzied by intense and depressed vocals.
Except done for the long ballad I Like Fasolino, - I can barely face its 9 minutes, when I prefer the Bedhead-ish mid-slowness of Andrea and Eyes, - the record is a successful collection of more tense songwriting, from the perfect opening track Personal Pepi, and afterwards with 5%, - precise percussions and cathartic melodies, memorable refrains. Well done indeed.
Later Sbacanta, instrumental piece, dynamically restless, a perfect heart-attack intro to Helen, one more brilliant song 90s flavoured, fervor of a potential alternative hit, with Joseph screaming out loud, initially made himself vehicle of pain and later of distress, like also in Bipede, framed by broken tempos and disenchanted poetry.
The final untitled ghost-track is a last round of machine gun fire. If only the dual guitar work had been more aggressive like here, dirt and rancid, They would have emphasized louder the inner ache and nihilism of Panic. Anyway, thumbs up.

I Twig Infection era una di quelle Band che io dico criminalmente sottovalutate, o ignorate dai più, che dir si voglia.
Da Siracusa, Sicilia, un EP e due bei dischi alle spalle, attivi dal 1998 al 2005, poi si sciolsero, e parte di loro riversò in progetti paralleli quali i Tellaro (con Franceso Cantone, voce, chitarra, tastiera), e - eccoci qui - The PepiBand (certo, che nome..), che vede Enzo Pepi (ah, ecco) e Marco Caruso, insieme ad Allessandro Formica e Joseph Forte (che sostituí Enzo nei Twig Infection quando lui lasciò).
Release di debutto, pane ed indie noise rock a colazione, i fan dei Polvo (la dichiarazione d'amore alla Loro terra Sicily) e Unwound (5%) non se li possono far scappare: la PepiBand si accende su dissonanze di chitarra math-rock e suoni distorti, nonchè, aggiunge benzina col cantato intenso e depresso di Joseph.
Ad eccezion fatta della lunga ballata I Like Fasolino, - mi resta difficile affrontarne i 9 minuti di durata, gli preferisco di molto la medio-lentezza à la Bedhead di Andrea ed Eyes, - il disco è una riuscita collezione fatta di scrittura carica di emotività, dall'ottimo inizio con Personal Pepi alla successiva 5%, - percussioni precise e melodie trascinanti, ritornelli memorabili. Un bel trasporto.
Poi Sbacanta, pezzo strumentale, dinamicamente senza posa, una perfetta intro tachicardica per la successiva Helen, un'altra canzone dal gusto anni 90, fervore da alternative hit, con Joseph che brucia l'ugola, resosi veicolo di dolore prima, e di angoscia poi, come anche in Bipede, incorniciato da tempi spezzati e poesia disincantata.
La finale ghost-track è un ultimo giro di mitragliatrice, e se solo il lavoro duale di chitarre fosse stato sempre tanto aggressivo, sporco e rancido, immagino che la PepiBand avrebbe meglio enfatizzato il malessere e nichilismo di Panic.
Ciò nonostante, pollice sù per certo.
