Torna Mice Parade - La Parata dei Topi,
anagrammati, come sempre, da Adam Pierce e da lui sapientemente
coordinati
e agghindati per la settima "sfilata" allestita in cooperazione
con la britannica FatCat rec: "What it means to be left-handed".
Il nuovo album del percussionista newyorkese esce a tre anni dal sesto lavoro e trabocca di stili apparentemente inconciliabili, etnie a confronto, influenze convergenti e collaborazioni rilevanti.
Si passa dai ritmi e suoni di derivazione afro-mbaqanghese e swahili, alle eteree vocine e atmosfere rarefatte dell'Islanda, alle schitarrate energiche del classico indie-rock anni '90 con punte di shoe-gaze, ad alcuni accenni di indie-tronica e una strizzatina d'occhio all'indie-folk-pop appena macchiato di tristezze e sapori brazileiri.
Inizialmente, l'album può risultare irritante se, come me, già alla terza battuta di sonorità africane, venite còlti da una pruriginosa orticaria e sembrare, come a detta di alcuni critici, più una raccolta di bei singoli che non un'opera uniformata e coesa.
Invece, via via che si avvicendano gli ascolti, ciò che ne emerge è una brillante maestria nel saper fondere stili tanto diversi e una briosa originalità condita di sensibilità e buon gusto.
What it means to be left-handed affida la ritmica all'eterno collaboratore Doug Scharin (già Codeine, Rex, June Of 44 e HIM), sostituisce la voce elfo-islandese di Kristin dei Múm con quelle di Caroline Lufkin e Meredith Godreau, si avvale del suonatore di kora senegalese Abdou M'Boup e della cantante swahili Somi - per ciò che riguarda le sonorità africane - si arricchisce delle suggestioni jazzy-J-pop dei giapponesi Clammbon e vede lo stesso Pierce impegnato, oltreché alle percussioni, in cantati di alcuna Beckiana e Sam Prekopiana memoria.
In più, conta due azzecatissime cover: Mallo cup dei Lemonheads, in omaggio al punk-alternative-rock, e Mary Anne di Tom Brosseau, come a voler concludere tanta costante e variegata bellezza, in un conciliante ossequio al folk cantautoriale.

Mice Parade is back, anagrammed, as always, by Adam Pierce who wisely coordinates and dresses the mice up for the seventh parade, set up together with the british FatCat rec: "What it means to be left-handed".
The NY percussionist's new album comes out three years after his sixth release, bubbling-over with music genres apparently incompatible, a comparison of more ethnic groups, converging influencies and considerable collaborations.
It goes from rhythms and sounds of afro-mbaqanghish and Swahili origins, to ethereal little voices and rarified atmospheres from Iceland, passing through energic hard rocking guitars dear to the 90s indie music, with tips of shoe-gaze, and some hints of indie-tronic, and an eye over the indie-folk-pop realm, just a little bit blended with Brazileir flavours and sadness.
At a first listen, this record might sound pesky, if, like me, since the third bar of african sonorities, you feel like some itchy spots pop out on the skin, and it is like a best-of album more than a regular release, as some critics may say.
Whatever, the more You listen, the more You'll sense an emerging bright mastery in merging some such so different styles, a playful originality flavoured with sensitivity and a good taste.
What it means to be left-handed puts the rhythms into the hands of the old-time mate Doug Scharin (formerly Codeine, Rex, June Of 44 and HIM), the role of Kristin (Múm) is taken by Caroline Lufkin and Meredith Godreau, and he's helped out by senegalese kora player Abdou M'Boup and the swahili singer Somi - for what concerns the african sound, - while the japanese Clammbon add some jazzy-J-pop harmonics. Last but not least, Pierce himself sings here and there, with a slight memory of Beck or Sam Prekop as well in his voice.
Plus, it features two successful covers: Mallo cup of Lemonheads, a tribute to alternative punk rock, and Mary Anne of Tom Brosseau, like to complete this work of constant and pied beauty with a conciliatory homage to folk music.
