It was years Highspire didn't pop up with a new full-lenght release since Their debut record in 2003, Your Everything (Alison / Clairecords).
Now Ej Hagen and Alex White (both also playing in The Morning After Girls), from Lancaster PA and Brooklyn NY, finally produced a follow up that gives new oxygen to Their - as well our - dreampop/shoegaze addiction, something that in Your Everything was now and then more down-tempo / trip-hop oriented in my opinion, like for Bowery Electric with Their last record Lushlife.
Differently, this new record is a dreampop delicacy made of reverb, phaser, delay and chorus guitar gears, long swirling keyboard soundcarpets and ethereal sampling, - soundcrafted by EJ and peacefully sung by Alex, - where the first two tracks Just Begun and What Lies Before are translucent and colourful, like the view of the sky seen from under the sea surface to above the surface, - as well as the reverse leading melodies of Dead By Dawn, - and of course, if You are a dolphin and You stare into the abyss, All I See Is Blue, a trascendental, seraphical interlude (vocals by Martin B. Sleeman of TMAG). Of course if You're a dolphin and your name is Flipper, if you stare into the abyss, You'd see Jessica Alba.
Btw, if You need coordinates in all this sea of sounds, I'd tell You, think The Meeting Places and The Melody Unit, Their gentle and melancholic sedated chatarsis. As well as also - for the old school, - Slowdive's Just for a Day, - I think Highspire's Glacier shares a special gift of slowness and grace with it.
And let's no forget Dusted, - the playful joy of its guitar solo, plus perfect melodic line, - this song may be a potential single.
I expect to hear the album's cover dolphin flying in the sky and singing So long and thanks for all the shoegaze. Underwater shoegaze.

Erano anni che gli Highspire non facevano capoccella con un nuovo disco dal gusto lungo dacché il Loro debutto nel 2003, a titolo Your Everything (Alison / Clairecords).
Ora Ej Hagen ed Alex White (entrambi anche nei The Morning After Girls), da Lancaster PA e Brooklyn NY, USA, finalmente hanno pubblicato un nuovo capitolo che dà rinnovato ossigeno alla Loro - nonchè alla Nostra - dipendenza da shoegaze/dreampop, qualcosa che, a mio avviso, in Your Everything era qua e là sviata da un certo tiro downtempo / trip-hop, un pò come per Lushlife dei Bowery Electric.
Diversamente, questo nuovo disco è una prelibatezza dreampop fatta di riverbero, phaser, delay, chorus, tutti effetti da chitarra elettrica come da ricetta, coadiuvati da tappeti sonori di tastiera e un campionario etereo, - musicalmente prodotto da EJ e cantato da Alex, - dove le prime due tracce Just Begun e What Lies Before sono tracce traslucenti e a colori vivi, come quello che si vede del cielo quando lo si guarda da sotto la superficie dell'acqua. Nonchè le melodie in reverse di Dead by Dawn, e, naturalmente, se siete delfini, e guardate verso l'abisso, All I See Is Blue, - un interludio trascendentale e serafico (questo, cantato da Martin B. Sleeman dei TMAG).
Chiaramente, se siete un delfino e vi chiamate Flipper, se guardate verso l'abisso, scorgerete Jessica Alba.
Cmq sia, se avete bisogno di coordinate in mare aperto, Vi indicherei The Meeting Places e The Melody Unit, per la Loro propensione alla più gentile e malinconica catarsi sedata. O, con un occhio alla vecchia scuola, il Just for a Day degli Slowdive, con cui la Glacier degli Highspire condivide una speciale abilità nel trarre la grazia dalla lentezza.
E non dimentichiamo poi Dusted, la Sua giocosa gioia nel suonare quell'assolo di chitarra, oltre la sua perfetta linea melodica, - direi il tutto ne fa un potenziale single.
Insomma, da un momento all'altro mi aspetto che il delfino in copertina faccia un salto, per volarsene poi per aria e cominciare a cantare So long and thanks for all the shoegaze. Shoegaze subacqueo.
