Do You know those sinister iron sounds made by trains when they ride slowly on railways in a desert place? - That's the oblique harmony of this vinyl split between Chora and Quivers, a two-faces ambient of gloomy jazz experimentalism and instrumental free-improvisation.
Pretty nerve-racking for the neighbourhood, fully inspiring for You as listeners and book-eaters as well, if only You let You get wrapped into it.
Beautiful art-cover by Pascal Nichols (of Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides), - this record sees Chora from UK - core members Rob Lye and Ben Morris, - and Quivers, USA-based quartet.
Chora are religiously percussive and clattering, - sharp shapeless drones, aching sounds, a baby-chaos demanding mother's attention, alt-jazz rattlesnakes, - narcotic mantra and ambients of pure hypnosis.
Hypnosis You can hardly get rid of it, - like swimming into a fish net of sounds. That train is right on your way and You can't move.
My mind goes back to some likewise quirky releases by Public Eyesore records, too.
Quivers are - if possible - more academic in Their unorthodoxy than Chora.
Featuring Ninni Morgia - I remember Him in the 90s for his White Tornado (really underestimated at that time!), - Their blistering approach is somehow more elegant, - sort of prepared guitars, bowed string instruments such as cello, bass, plus strangled sax, resonant drums and percussions, - hybrid of tenor sounds and subtle contrasts. Gently strident. Psychedelic interrupted soundscapes. A dizzy alchemy, exploring the inventive boundaries of noise. Sort of peaceful ecstasy for the restless.
I say this is a fair good split LP record, - I am sure I'm going to put it often on the turntable.

Piuttosto snervante per il vicinato, pienamente d'ispirazione per Voi quali ascoltatori e mangia-libri, se Vi lasciate catturare.

I primi sono religiosamente percussivi e frastornanti, - drone taglienti e senza forma, suoni dolorosi, un neonato chaos che reclama le attenzioni della madre, serpente a sonagli alt-jazz, mantra narcotico e ambienti di pura ipnosi. Un'ipnosi di cui ci si può sbarazzare difficilmente, come a nuotare in una rete per i pesci.
Mi son tornati in mente diversi dischi - altrettanto osé, editi dalla Public Eyesore rec.
I Quivers - se possibile, - sono più accademici nella Loro non-ortodossia rispetto i Chora.
Nella line-up figura Ninni Morgia - negli anni 90 era, diciamo, noto per i suoi White Tornado (personalmente, direi sempre molto sottostimati), - l'approccio feroce è in qualche modo più elegante, - sorta di chitarre modificate, strumenti ad arco quali cello, basso, più sax strangolato, batterie e percussioni risonanti, un ibrido di suoni tenore e sottili contrasto. Il tutto gentilmente stridente. Soundscapes psichedelici spezzati in se stessi. Un'alchemia vertiginosa, che esplora i confini dell'inventiva noise. Sorta di estasi pacifica per i senza posa.
Direi che è un ottimo LP split, sono sicuro che tornerò a rimetterlo sul piatto spesso.
