Power three piece band from Brescia, northern Italy, - De fauna et flora is The Record's second full-lenght disc, this time released by Foolica label (Did, Camera 237).
If Their former Money's on fire, dated 2 years ago, had room for perfect college alternative rock songs enwrapped into a delightful sound production, - something i could define placed among Elvis Costello and Weezer's nerdish punk irony, - the new songs look like studied for a late 50s / early 60s american pop chart as the tracklist goes on (Rodolfo, the midtempo of Don't go to bed angry), - as well as that Beatles' early r'n'r face and later the related brit-invasion shaped and changed the sound and musical creativity of masses.
It seems like The Record's have hardly studied the matter, - because here it looks like nothing is left to chance, each song is a perfect excercise of ragtime tones, precise rock and roll, early garage music frenzy, always with a remarkable sound engineering, and rich arrangements, far from the simple core of the verse/chorus/verse, plus, They feature two melodious lead male singers, - and They follow the right formula for being the perfect party band, where I love my family and Call of the Ice mix Talking Heads with power-pop drumming, and the singalong of We all need to be alone is totally entralling.
And You cannot but dancing to New gear, new feel.
And after the party, there's time for some more intimate and melancholic numbers such as Panama Hat, Rain Down.
- Probably Mr. Hide is the single here, - it sounds like totally out of place in this record, - a more modern writing than the other titles.
De flora et fauna is for sure an unusual release for the alternative italian scene, - it totally sounds ready for a wider scenery. Maybe, on an emotive level, it'll be not one of my favorite records, - but it's totally worthy plaudit and respect for its geometries and perfections.

Se il Loro precedente Money's on fire, di due anni fa, dava spazio a delle perfette alternative rock songs catturate da una invidiabile produzione dei suoni, - qualcosa che potrei definire tra Elvis Costello e l'ironia nerd punk dei Weezer, - le nuove canzoni sembrano quasi studiate per scalare una pop chart fine anni 50 / inizio 60 (Rodolfo, il midtempo si Don't go to bed angry), una linea temporale quasi scandita dall'ordine della tracklist (Rodolfo, il midtempo di Don't go to bed angry), - come anche quel primo lato r'n'r dei Beatles nonchè la successiva e relativa brit-invasion che ha segnato e formato la creatività musicale delle masse.
Insomma, sembra che i The Record's abbiano studiato a dovere la materia, perchè qui nulla pare lasciato al caso, - ogni canzone è un perfetto esercizio di toni ragtime, preciso rock and roll, prime frenesie garage, - sempre con una produzione sopra le righe e ricchi arrangiamenti che evitano alla grande la facile via del verse/choruse/verse. In più, hanno due ottimi cantanti, voci melodiose, sicuri di sè, - vestono, in poche parole, i panni della perfetta party band, dove I love my family e Call of the Ice mixano i Talking Heads con percussioni power-pop, nonchè, il singalong di We all need to be alone è totalmente trascinante: poi non si può non ballare New gear, new feel.
E a fine party, c'è tempo per un pò di cose più intime e malinconiche, ovvero i numeri di Panama Hat, e Rain Down.
- Probabilmente è Mr. Hide a rivestire i panni del singolo qui, - tanto è estraneo e fuori posto nel disco, - possiede una scrittura più moderna, estranea agli altri titoli.
Nel complesso, De flora et fauna è per certo un disco inusuale per il panorama italiano, - suona assolutamente come un prodotto maturo per uno pubblico più ampio che il solo italiano. Magari non sarà il mio disco preferito a livello emozionale, ma tanto di cappello alle sue geometrie e perfezioni.
