I know people totally in love with Elliot Smith, Kevin Devine, Badly Drawn Boy, and Co. - Die-hard hc fans that, as one of above artists starts singing their introspective lyrics and bluesy riffs, turn to start secretly crying like a girlie. Personally, besides acknoledging Their talent and poetry, i never really became attached to this kind of music. I can't say exactly why: maybe it's because of that balance of melodic accessibility blended with desperate inner look.. hmm.. not my cup of tea. - That's, more or less, what i think of Southerly too, aka Krist Krueger, - from Portland: - he is a skilled songwriter, and storyteller, - maybe also a Gossip Columnist? - who can say, - anyway my favorite track here is Pistols In Paradise, an instrumental piece of music, wordless, thought like a swirling spiral, - fast, maybe even too much brief to be that stunning that could be, - but at the same time, it's unexpected, placed at the middle of the album track list, and with a slight sense of cathartis, - although a catharsis soon choked, - especially because it's followed by Cold Caller, - a piano driven song, sort of 70s pop rock, lighter, full of do-do-do-do (chorus also for How To Be A Dreamer).
- Recorded in 2006, released in 2007 and reissued this year by Artic Rodeo, - Storyteller and the Gossip Columnist is second album for Southerly: emotional, brilliant, it features orchestral pop arrangements (Taking Stock, Visage Sans Expression, For The Speechless Coward, ..), able to work fine also for a traditional guitar plus vocal session; the album is a candles box, votive to folk pop, with hilights on A Coarse Design, and, last but not least, the gentle explosion of whispers in If We All Forget.

Conosco persone follemente innamorate di Elliot Smith, Kevin Devine, Badly Drawn Boy, and Co. Fan irrudicibili dell'hc che, come uno dei sopra citati comincia a cantare i suoi testi introspettivi e a suonare la prima nota malinconica, scoppiano a piangere segretamente come delle educande. - Personalmente, a parte riconoscerne il talento e poesia, non mi sono mai attaccato a questo tipo di musica. Non so dire propriamente perchè: forse è per quella bilancia di accessibilità melodica e instropezione disperata.. nn non la mia tazza di karkadé. Questi, più o meno, i miei pensieri per Southerly, aka Krist Krueger, da Portland (pure lui): è uno scrittore di talento, e raccontastorie (storyteller), forse anche uno che scrive di gossip (Gossip Columnist), chi lo può dire, - comunque sia, la mia traccia preferita di questo album è Pistols in Paradise, un pezzo strumentale, senza parole, pensato come una spirale volteggiante, - veloce nelle sue evoluzioni, forse anche troppo, troppo breve per essere di impatto come avrebbe potuto; ma per il fatto di essere in attesa, posta a metà album, ha quel suo senso di catarsi, - catarsi però presto soffocata, specie a causa dalla traccia seguente, Cold Caller, guidata dal piano, sorta di jam 70 pop rock, piena di do-do-do-do (ritornello che pare trovare funzione anche in How to Be a Dreamer).
